The Present Continuous is the verbal tense we use to say what people are doing or what is happening around us now, at present. This tense has nothing to do with the Present Simple. The Present Simple is the tense we use to describe what is usual, what happens time after time, with a certain frequency. On the other hand, the Present Continuous describes the immediate present, which doesn't necessarily coincide with routines".
The Present Continuous is often used to:
- Describe what we are doing or what is happening right now: "I am watching TV"; "It is raining". There is no need to say "when". It is clear that these things are happening now.
- Describe things happening not right now but around the present : "I'm reading the "Little Prince"; "This week, I'm studying a lot" .
- Describe temporary (not permanent) activities: "I am living in Seville"; "He is working as a barman". -I live in Madrid- (Present Simple) means that my permanent place of residence is Madrid. -I am living in Seville- means that Seville is not the place where I usually live, but I'm living there temporarily because of my job, studies, etc.
By using the Present Continuous tense, you can describe what's happening around you and, by the end of this unit, you will be able to describe a photograph, what people are doing there and what clothes they are wearing.

En esta unidad vamos a aprender cómo se conjuga y se usa el "Presente Continuo". Es importante que, cuando acabes la unidad, entiendas perfectamente la diferencia entre los dos presentes.
El Presente Continuo es el tiempo verbal que utilizamos para decir lo que alguien está haciendo o lo que está ocurriendo a nuestro alrededor en este momento, en el presente inmediato. Este tiempo no tiene nada que ver con el Presente Simple. El Presente Simple es el tiempo que usamos para describir lo que es habitual, lo que sucede una y otra vez, con una cierta frecuencia. Sin embargo, el Presente Continuo describe el presente inmediato, que no necesariamente coincide con nuestra rutina.
El Presente Continuo se suele utilizar para:
- Describir lo que estamos haciendo o lo que está sucediendo en este momento: "I'm watching TV"; "It's raining". No es necesario decir "cuándo". Es claro que estas cosas están ocurriendo ahora por el simple hecho de utilizar el Presente Continuo.
- Describir lo que está ocurriendo no en este momento, sino más o menos alrededor del presente: "I'm reading the "Little Prince"; "This week, I'm studying a lot" ..
- Describir actividades temporales (no permanentes): "I am living in Seville"; "He is working as a barman". -I live in Madrid- (Presente Simple) significa que mi lugar permanente de residencia es Madrid. -I am living in Seville- significa que Sevilla no es el lugar donde suelo vivir, pero estoy viviendo allí temporalmente por trabajo, estudios, etc.
Usando el Presente Continuo puedes describir lo que está ocurriendo a tu alrededor y, al final de esta unidad, podrás describir una fotografía, lo que ves que las personas están haciendo y qué ropa llevan puesta.
