Tommy's Busy Day

Tommy was a very energetic boy who loved doing many things throughout his day. One sunny morning, Tommy decided to make the most of his day.

First, he tidied up his room. He did it so quickly! In no time, all his toys were back in their places, and his books were neatly arranged on the shelf.

After cleaning, Tommy went to the garden to help his mum. He watered the plants gently, making sure not to disturb the tiny flowers and the bees buzzing softly around them.

In the afternoon, Tommy and his dog, Buster, played in the park. Buster ran incredibly fast, chasing the frisbee. Tommy laughed loudly, enjoying the fun game and the warm sunshine.

Later, Tommy decided to draw a picture for his grandma. He worked on it carefully, choosing the colours thoughtfully and placing each stroke delicately on the paper.

When it was time for dinner, Tommy ate his vegetables quietly, not making a fuss. He knew eating healthily was important, even if carrots weren't his favourite.

Before bed, Tommy read a story to his little sister. He read slowly, making sure she understood every word and could follow the magical tale.

As the day ended, Tommy felt very happy. He had done everything well and had a wonderful time. "What a great day!" he thought, as he went to sleep peacefully.

In our story, Tommy is described as "energetic". This is an adjective because it tells us what kind of boy Tommy is. When we say "the sunny morning", "sunny" is an adjective because it describes the morning.

Adverbs of Manner

Adverbs of manner tell us how we do something. In the story, when Tommy tidies up his room "quickly", the word "quickly" is an adverb because it tells us how Tommy tidied his room. Similarly, when Tommy "gently" watered the plants, "gently" is an adverb describing how he watered them.

Forming Adverbs of Manner

To form an adverb from an adjective, we often add "-ly" to the end of the adjective. For example, "quick" becomes "quickly", and "gentle" becomes "gently". However, there are some special rules:

  • If an adjective ends in "-y", like "happy", we change the "y" to "i" and add "-ly" to make "happily".
  • If an adjective ends in "-le", like "gentle", we just add "-y" to make "gently".
  • For adjectives ending in "-ic", we add "-ally", like "ironic" becoming "ironically".
  • Remember, not all words ending in "-ly" are adverbs. Some adjectives end in "-ly" too, like "friendly". In this case, we say "in a friendly way" instead of using "friendlily".
  • But watch out! Some adverbs look just like their adjectives, like "fast". Both the adjective and adverb are "fast", as in "Tommy runs fast". These are irregular adverbs.

¿necesitas ayuda?
