When did you...?

Look at the question in this section: When did you...? (When did you finish university?).

If you want to answer a "When"-question, you will have to use a preposition of time, being the most common IN-ON-AT.

Read the following sentences and think about the use of prepositions of time.

  1. The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, resulting in one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history.
  2. At 6:00 p.m. on April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred in Ukraine, becoming one of the most catastrophic events in the history of nuclear power.
  3. The Renaissance, a period of cultural and artistic flourishing, took place in the 15th and 16th centuries.
  4. At 9:30 a.m. on September 11, 2001, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were attacked
  5. The Beatles rose to fame in the 1960s, changing the landscape of popular music forever.
  6. The Great Fire of London occurred in 1666, destroying a significant part of the city.
  7. At midnight on January 1, 2002, euro banknotes and coins were introduced, marking the official launch of the euro currency in 12 European Union countries.
  8. Sir Winston Churchill, one of the most iconic political figures of the 20th century, passed away at Easter in 1965.
  9. The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, leading to the reunification of Germany.
  10. The first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 in Athens.
  11. William Shakespeare wrote many of his iconic plays in the late 16th century.
  12. The signing of the Declaration of Independence of the USA took place on July 4, 1776.

Can you guess what kind of time phrases go with IN-ON-AT ?

... and can you make a question with "WHEN" for each sentence? For example:

  1. When did the Titanic sink ? (Past Simple question)  -  The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912.
  2. When did the Chernobyl nuclear disaster occur?  -  The Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred at 6:00 p.m. on April 26, 1986.
  3. When did...

Fíjate en el título de la sección: When did you...? (p.ej. When did you finish university? - ¿Cuándo acabaste la universidad?)

Es una pregunta en pasado en la que usamos el pronombre interrogativo "WHEN" (Cuándo). A esta pregunta y cualquier otra con "WHEN" tendrás que responder utilizando una preposición de tiempo, probablemente IN, ON o AT.

Observa las oraciones en las que se describen hechos históricos conocidos. ¿Serías capaz de decir qué tipo de complementos de tiempo acompañan a cada una de las preposiciones?

Y, ¿te atreves a hacer una pregunta en pasado simple con "WHEN" para cada una de las oraciones, como en los dos ejemplos?
