In this section, you will learn how to form and use the imperative in English.
We use the Imperative to give instructions, orders, warnings, advice or invitations:
- Mix the flour with hot water (instructions)
- Fasten your seatbelt (order)
- Be careful (warning)
- Tell her how you feel (advice)
- Come and sit with us (invitation)
We might want to ask someone NOT to do something. In that case we use the negative form of the Imperative:
- Don't eat in class.
- Don't play with your cell phones.
- Don't be late.
You can learn about this in the following section.

En esta sección vamos a aprender a formar y usar el imperativo.
El imperativo es una forma verbal que utilizaremos para dar instrucciones, órdenes, advertencias o pedir algo.
- Mix the flour with hot water (instructions) Mezcle la harina con agua caliente.
- Fasten your seatbelt (order) Abróchense los cinturones.
- Be careful (warning) Ten cuidado.
- Tell her how you feel (advice) Cuéntale cómo te sientes.
- Come and sit with us (invitation) Ven y siéntate con nosotros.
Puede que lo que queramos es que alguien NO haga algo. En ese caso utilizaremos el imperativo negativo:
- Don't eat in class No comas en clase
- Don't play with your cell phones. No juegues con el móvil
- Don't be late. No llegues tarde
En el siguiente apartado podrás estudiar todo con detalle.
